Hot on the heels of seeing Depeche Mode at The Royal Albert Hall with my wife and two sons, this time was the turn to take my Brother-in-law to see the band for his first time.
The journey to and from the O2 was a nightmare with engineering works on both the mainline and underground, meaning we had to use a combination of train, coach, tube, taxi and even boat to get there. Never mind!
Despite that, another great concert followed. This was the show originally scheduled for May 2009 but postponed due to Dave Gahan’s illness.
The support act was Nitzer Ebb. This was the first time I’d seen them and they were really good; a much better ‘fit’ than the Soulsaver, the band that supported on the first O2 concert of this tour (Depeche Mode at the O2 – 16th December 2009)

DM came on half-an-hour earlier than normal because of the travel issues and played another two hour set. Martin Gore sang ‘Freelove’ during the ‘slow bit in the middle’ which was great. We didn’t get the violins as had happened earlier in the week at the RAH but the sound was still good.
As before, they finished with Personal Jesus and I just love the mix on this concert version with the transition from a slow, bluesy beginning to the rocky, live anthem that this classic has become.
On this ‘Tour of the Universe’, I’ve now seen Depeche Mode three times. It’s quite scary to think that the first time I saw them was February, 1982 at Portsmouth Guildhall but they’ve certainly aged well and definitely get better as time goes by. Can’t wait until the next one!

Obviously, I took these with a basic digital camera, so please don’t go expecting top quality photos!
