Career
I joined the British Army straight from school in 1984 joining the (as was) Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion in Shorncliffe, Kent. I served in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Green Jackets (3RGJ), now The Rifles.
After about three years of infantry life, a few beers with a guy from the Royal Army Pay Corps, whilst on a skiing course in Germany, led me to transfer in order to do ‘something sensible‘.
3 RGJ, BATUS, Canada 1986
This was a good move in many respects ‘though, with hindsight, I should have gone on to further education before joining the Army which, no doubt, would have led to an entirely different career in the Armed Forces. Generally though, I believe the Army was a great experience and served as a good grounding. I occasionally wished I had stayed in but that moment soon passes!
I then spent eight years working for an engineering company in the Aerospace sector. Eventually, I became a Customer Service Manager but this was not the right thing for me. A long lesson.
During this time I had a new software application developed for my department and the company that built it, New Planet Solutions (NPS), offered me a role.
So, in 1999, I entered the world of IT! This was good in the respect it introduced me to a new career path but was ultimately destined to end for me as the company was full of egos. Three piece suits and BS a plenty. NPS eventually split into three separate entities (three CEOs) in my time there. It was certainly fascinating to watch this process unfold. The phrase ‘too many chiefs…’ was almost spot on.
From here, I was approached by one of their business partners to join them. This was Nimbus Partners, who are developers of process management software, control-ES.
This is a fantastic process management application and I enjoyed my time as a Consultant and Lead Trainer. Nimbus is doing really well and I still like to keep an eye on how they are developing. They have a very bright management team and I’m sure will continue go from strength to strength.
My interest in the Internet started in about 2000. Working in IT led me to be ‘volunteered‘ to create the website for my Rugby club (Nomads RFC, Portsmouth) ‘though I hasten to add this has since been taken over by someone else and I have nothing to do with its current design!
I then started to dabble with creating my own sites which, in turn, led on to developing my skills in search engine marketing.
Following a spell working on an SEO contract for an ‘interesting character‘ (I still shudder), in March 2007, I joined Impact Media as Head of Search.
At the time I joined, this was a fledgling company with just the MD and his sales assistant. It was quite a buzz in the early days as we grew with everyone contributing to the growth of the company.
I’m proud of my contribution to the success of Impact Media (now re-branded to Koozai) who continue to develop a strong reputation in the digital marketing industry.
At the end of 2010, I left to pursue my own interests with my own company, Bold Internet Ltd, offering both SEO and PPC services within the SME sector.
